Want an easy way to walk more? Try a pedometer. A new study shows that people who use pedometers walk much farther than people who don't.
A pedometer clips onto your belt and tracks how many steps you take each day. At the end of the day, you simply look at the digital display and see how many steps you have taken.
The study, published in this month's Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, found that overweight, inactive women did better when they were given a pedometer and told to take 10,000 steps, compared to women who were given a sealed pedometer and told to walk for thirty minutes.
When women could count their steps using the pedometer, they not only met the goal, they walked an average of 2,000 steps extra on days they went on walks. And on other days, they still walked more than they usually did. Women who couldn't see their pedometer's display did go on the 30 minute walk sometimes, but when they didn't, they weren't as active as the other women.
Write it down – jot down the number of steps you've taken during the day and you'll have a record of how far you really are walking every day. Even on un-energetic days, you'll see your past successes down on paper.
Notice those steps – you may be surprised to see how many steps you take running an errand, strolling through a store, or even walking to the mailbox. Notice how many steps you take doing everyday things and you'll stay motivated.
Get the easy to read pedometer – TriVita's pedometer counts steps, calories burned and tracks your miles. To learn more about this product, visit Trivita

If you’re young at heart, your heart might be younger than you realize. A new study shows that athletic older adults have young, flexible hearts – with about half the stiffness of sedentary adult’s hearts. Exercise seems to be the fountain of youth for the heart – it can actually keep heart muscles flexible, which reduces the risk of heart failure. And since heart failure is the number one cause of hospitalizations for people over 65, this is important news.
In the study, the hearts of nationally-ranked senior athletes were so healthy, researchers couldn’t tell them apart from young people – the athletic senior hearts pumped as well as the hearts of healthy people half their age.
The study, published in the September 2004 issue of Circulation, a journal of the American Heart Association, compared senior athletes (average age 68) with sedentary seniors, and young sedentary adults. Researchers found that activity influenced heart health, even for older adults.
Walk - a stroll around the block is great exercise and fun too! Clip a pedometer on your belt and see how quickly those steps add up to better health.
Dance – silly or serious, it gets your heart pumping. Put on your favorite song at home, or go to a social dancing event.
Swim – if there’s an indoor pool near by, splash your way to health. You don’t need to be a perfect dolphin-like swimmer, just enjoy moving.

If you can’t seem to get off the couch and start exercising, ask yourself if one of these exercise barriers is holding you back.
All or nothing – if you’re an “all or nothing” thinker, you may put off exercising until you have plenty of time, no distractions, or can afford the perfect running shoes. Remember, you don’t have to endure an uninterrupted hour of exercise to benefit. Take the stairs, park farther away, or even squeeze in a mini-workout before dinner. Short workouts do add up to greater health and well being, sooner than you may realize. Try wearing a pedometer and see how quickly everyday steps can add up.
In a bad habit – exercise is a habit like any other. If you’re in the habit of spending your free time on the couch, it will be difficult to change your routine. Luckily, habits can be broken and once you learn a new way to do things, you’ll likely find your new habit easy to stick with. All it takes is going on an evening walk, enjoying a dance class, or getting involved in a sports team you enjoy. Before you know it, your bad habits can be changed to a lifestyle that leads you right to your goals.
The wrong fuel – though it takes time to build up your exercise endurance, if you’re not sticking to your routine or seeing results, you may be eating the wrong foods and starving your body of good exercise nutrition. Make a point to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins. Taking a daily multivitamin and energy supplement may also help increase your energy while you exercise. Remember, a diet of fast food, chips, donuts, soda pop and cookies will not help your body stay healthy and energized during exercise, compared to a healthier diet.
Unhelpful people – if the people closest to you don’t share your exercise and health goals, it can be hard to change your routine, especially if you spend a lot of time with people who enjoy foods and activities that make staying healthy difficult. If you’ve tried to explain the importance of health and wellness and it doesn’t help, focus on finding exercise buddies and people to help support your goals.
Track each step you take towards your health goals with TriVita’s easy-to-use Healthy Living Pedometer – it is the highest quality pedometer available, and it counts calories, steps and distance, so you can just enjoy your workout! To learn more about this product, visit Trivita

Did you know that the simple act of walking benefits your body in incredible ways? This low-impact activity reduces your risk of the number one cause of death in the United States – heart disease. It also helps prevent: high blood pressure, stroke, cancer and diabetes.
- Reduce the risk of nerve damage in diabetics – only 6.5% of walkers had nerve damage, compared with 30% of non-walkers.
- Prevent hip fractures in postmenopausal women – just 30 minutes a day reduces risk by 40%.
- Reduce the risk of stroke in women – experts suspect this is due to maintaining healthy weight, keeping blood pressure at a healthy level, and increasing “good” HDL cholesterol.
To get started, take a stroll through a local park, nature trail, or just step outside and meander through your neighborhood. If the weather is too chilly, try walking around your local mall – many malls offer walking programs which meet before the mall opens – you can meet new friends, exercise and window-shop all at the same time!
Tip: If walking for 30 minutes, 5 days a week sounds challenging, start by walking for one minute a day. Each day, add one minute to your walk – in only 30 days you’ll be walking for 30 minutes! And don’t forget, those little steps you take every day add up – walking to the mailbox, cleaning the house, even walking around the grocery store – use a pedometer to see how quickly little steps add up to big results.
Count every step towards your health goals with TriVita’s easy-to-read pedometer.

For most men, prostate cancer is a big concern – close to one in six men will get prostate cancer during their lifetime. Close to 80% of men over 80 already have prostate cancer. But there are things men can do to help lower their risk.
Exercise – even getting a few extra minutes of exercise can help reduce risk of diseases. Try walking, lifting weights at a gym, or playing a sport.
Eat right – eating plenty of antioxidant-packed fruits and vegetables may help stop cell-damaging free radicals. Try adding a few fresh snacks to your daily diet.
Learn – ask relatives about your own family history of cancer, and stay aware of health information that may affect you. Go to your local library and learn all you can about conditions that concern you.
Check-up – men 50 and over should have a prostate exam and blood test once a year. For men with a family history, start getting exams at age 40. Keep your doctor informed of any changes or concerns, such as urinary problems.
Fill gaps – nutritional gaps leave you vulnerable. Supplement your diet with helpful vitamins and herbs such as: magnesium, zinc, selenium, lycopene, saw palmetto and stinging nettle root.

You’ve probably heard about the dangers of prescription medication mistakes – even the most dedicated health care professional can make an occasional error, making it important to take an active role in your own health and safety.
So what can you do? A new study shows one simple thing may help keep you safe.
Researchers found that avoiding the pharmacy during the beginning of the month may help avoid prescription errors. The study, published in the January issue of Pharmacotherapy, found that medication mistakes rise by 25 percent during the first few days of the month – a time when many pharmacies are very busy filling prescriptions for Americans who have just received government checks. Keep this and other tips in mind to help keep your medications safe.
TIPS FOR SAFER PRESCRIPTIONS:
- Avoid the busy time – if possible, don’t pick up your prescriptions during the first few days of the month, which is the most hectic time for pharmacies. If you have to go during the beginning of the month, check your prescriptions extra carefully.
- Always double check – if you can, jot down the name of the prescription and the dosage before dropping it off. When you pick it up, double check it’s the same information on the label.
- If you aren’t sure, ask – if the prescription doesn’t sound correct, call your doctor or pharmacist, or both. You may feel like a bother, but if you don’t bother, you may not be giving your health the attention it needs.
- Let the pharmacist talk – you may be in a rush, but make sure you wait to talk to the pharmacist about your prescription. They may give you important information you would miss otherwise.
- It doesn’t hurt to look it up – if you’ve never heard of the drug you’ve been prescribed, go online and search for information. For example, if you were prescribed a painkiller instead of an asthma medication, and your doctor didn’t have a chance to explain the reasoning behind this, you may want to call and ask.
- Stay aware of side effects – if you notice side effects which concern you, call your doctor. You may not be tolerating the medication well, the dosage may be too high, or... you may not be taking the right prescription.

If you deal with pain that affects your health or activities, you’re not alone. A new study found that pain was a problem for close to one in three employees at a Fortune 100 company.
Researchers found that lost days at work and productivity from pain is a major problem. Four common conditions that cause pain – arthritis, back pain, headaches and musculoskeletal problems – cost more than $62 billion in lost work productivity a year.
A link was also found between pain and overall health. Pain appeared to be connected with a 23% decline in mental health and 45% drop in physical health. The study was published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
PAIN TIPS:
- Talk to your doctor – ask your health care professional about your pain. Weigh the pros and cons of options your doctor suggests, talk to friends and family and make the decision that is best for you.
- Try deep breathing – try taking in slow deep breaths. Focus your attention on the feeling and sound of your breath as you breathe in. As you exhale, imagine you're breathing out the pain.
- Stay active – though pain will likely discourage you from wanting to move and be active, look for exercises and activities you can safely do. Exercise improves circulation, which can help improve pain for some people.
- Stop the pain. Start doing what you want. Get TriVita’s soothing Quick-Relief Gel™ today. To learn more about this product, visit www.trivita.com/13011183

Have you had your homocysteine level checked? You are at greater risk for Alzheimer’s Disease if you have a high level of homocysteine. You’re also at greater risk if you don’t have enough folic acid and Vitamin B-12, found a 1998 Oxford study, published in the Archives of Neurology.
A high level of homocysteine can also increase your risk of dying prematurely from diseases such as: cancer, heart disease, stroke, and lung diseases, found a July 2001 study by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
So what can you do to reduce your risk and lower your homocysteine?
. Get enough folic acid, and Vitamins B-12 and B-6
. Eat a balanced diet with plenty of lean meats, fruits and vegetables
. Exercise
. Stop smoking
The single biggest factor in reducing your risk, is taking B-12, B-6 and folic acid supplements in a sublingual form. Many people over the age of 40 cannot absorb these vitamins if given in a regular pill form. The sublingual tablet is placed under your tongue and is absorbed directly into your bloodstream.
Alzheimer’s Disease is a devastating illness that causes confusion, memory loss, and language problems. Unlike other forms of dementia, once Alzheimer’s strikes, a nutritious diet is not enough to reverse the damage. That’s why it’s so important to reduce your levels of homocysteine and fortify your body with Vitamin B-12 and folic acid, before the disease even has a chance to strike.
Reduce your homocysteine level and lower your risk of disease with TriVita’s Sublingual B-12, B-6 & Folic Acid.™

People’s needs are as individual as people themselves. There are basic needs such as food, warmth and shelter that we all share as human beings. Maybe you donate money or time to a charity that helps provide just those things (and if you are not currently doing so, you might want to ask around for a worthy organization that provides basic needs for the less fortunate).
But there are other needs - often invisible needs - found in the people around you. It’s almost certain that the people you meet and interact with carry some amount of stress, discomfort, illness, or worry. You can help those around you by being sensitive to these unspoken needs and being an open ear, a warm hug, and bright smile for those who need it most.
Asking questions
“How are you?” is sort of a routine question these days. Get specific. If you know about a particular worry someone has, ask about it if it’s appropriate. Or ask what the person did yesterday; this invites a more specific response and may clue you in to a particular need in that person’s life.
Listening
Asking questions doesn’t mean much if you don’t listen to the response. Devote your full attention to the person speaking to you. Make eye contact. In your mind, make mental connections with the person’s difficult situation and relate it to something similar in your own life. What did you need most from others at that time?
Praying
Not only should you pray for the needs of others, but if you know you could be a little more sensitive – and most of us could be – go ahead and ask God to help you in this area. You’re here to do His will, after all, and helping those around you is always on His agenda for your life.
TriVita’s Sublingual B-12, B-6 & Folic Acid.™ contains the perfect mixture of vitamins needed to boost your mood and energize your day. As you listen to others and become more sensitive to their needs, see if any of their needs include words like energy, or better mood. If you’ve been helped by TriVita’s patented B-12 tablets, why not pass it along to someone else as a Gift of Health?

Lost your keys? Forgot your wallet? Misplaced your purse? It’s easy to forget a thing or two, especially when you’re under stress or feel overwhelmed with details.
Follow these tips to give your brain a break:
Write it down:
When you write things down, it helps you remember. And if you still forget, at least you’ll have the information written down. Keep notepads by the phone, in your car and a small one in your pocket or purse.
Leave yourself notes:
Write down notes to yourself and stick them in unusual places where you’re sure to see them -- if you need to remember something before you leave, put a big note on the door knob.
Use memory tricks:
If you need to remember a list of things, use the first letter of each phrase and spell a word. For example, if you need to take your cat the vet, arrange the flowers, and balance your checkbook, take the first letter of each phrase and spell “C-A-B.” It’s easier to remember one word than 3 phrases.
Make lists:
Lists not only help you remember, but help you organize. As you’re writing your list, you can separate it into categories like: to-do, to-buy, etc. This makes it easy to combine tasks, which will save you trips.
Pratice:
Practice really does make perfect. Playing puzzle and memory games will exercise your mind, make you sharper and improve your memory. Chances are there is someone in your life who would love to challenge you to a game!
Use alarms:
Use the alarm on your clock, watch, oven, cell phone, or PDA to remind you. Sometimes a loud, annoying buzz is all you need to remember to do something.

You know about Vitamin B-12’s ability to improve energy, mental clarity and emotional balance, but have you heard it may also benefit your bones?
A new study found that Vitamin B-12 and folate supplements may help stroke patients reduce their risk of hip fractures.
During the study, stroke patients were given folate and Vitamin B-12. The patients' levels of toxic homocysteine dropped dramatically – a 38 percent decrease. And only six patients fractured their hips during a two-year period, much less than the 27 people in the control group who did not receive the supplements.
People who didn’t get the supplements also had homocysteine levels that were 31 percent higher.
The study was published in the March issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

You or someone you know may be a caregiver to a loved one who is ill or otherwise restricted to home care. The person being cared for no doubt has very specific needs relating to their health and well-being, however, being a caregiver carries with it certain risks that cannot be ignored. Stress can be the caregiver’s greatest foe.
Everyone experiences stress at one time or another, and frequent or prolonged stress is bad for anyone. For caregivers, stress can affect not only the caregiver but the person being cared for as well. Stress has an effect on your physical, emotional and spiritual health, and that can affect how well you are able to provide care. Here are some suggestions to reduce your level of stress:
Maintain social contacts.
Feelings of isolation or loneliness increase stress. Make sure you are taking the time to enjoy your own life with your friends.
Ask for help.
Being a principal caregiver is a full-time job, but everyone needs a break. Don’t feel as though you and you alone are responsible for care; ask for help shopping, cleaning, or whatever would take strain off of you.
Eat nutritiously, enjoy activity, and sleep peacefully.
Eating nutritious meals with plenty of vegetables, drinking water, getting at least 30 minutes of exercise a day, and getting a full night’s sleep is critical to your physical health. Once you start feeling sick, your ability to provide care will decrease, putting additional stress on you. Take care of your body!
Get informed.
The Older Americans Act Amendments of 2000 established the National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP). The program was developed by the Administration on Aging of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. NFCSP was modeled in large part after successful programs already in place in several states. For more information and help, visit the National Family Caregiver Support website.
Your job as a caregiver is a major responsibility, and one that many people would sooner pass up. Give yourself the credit you deserve for your hard work, and keep your personal health at the top of your priorities to better serve the one you are caring for.
Vitamin B-12 helps provide physical stamina and fosters an optimistic outlook, two things that are excellent for reducing stress. TriVita’s Sublingual B-12, B-6 & Folic Acid.™ melts under your tongue, and when taken consistently, B Vitamins reduce your risk for heart disease, Alzheimer's and stroke.

You might not have time to grab breakfast, but do you have time for heart disease? A new study shows that skipping the most important meal of the day may lead to higher “bad” LDL cholesterol and insulin resistance – both risk factors for heart disease. It may also lead to weight gain.
The study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, followed ten women and asked them to eat breakfast and a mid-morning snack for two weeks. The women then took a two-week break. After that , the women did not eat breakfast or a mid-morning snack for another two weeks.
THE RESULTS?
When the women did not eat breakfast, they ate more during the day – about 100 calories more.
Not eating breakfast also impacted cholesterol – “bad” LDL cholesterol was 60 for breakfast eaters and 70 for those who skipped a morning meal. And total cholesterol was also affected – 121 mg/dL for breakfast eaters, compared with 133 for women who didn’t eat breakfast.
Eating breakfast also seemed to improve the way insulin works in the body, compared to not eating breakfast, leading researchers to believe breakfast may help lower diabetes risk.
Over time, not eating breakfast may influence heart disease risk, according to researchers, since both insulin and cholesterol levels influence risk.

Don't Be Slowed Down by Weight Loss Speed Bumps
This is the perfect time of year for an encouraging article on keeping your weight loss goals. Why? Because nearly half of all people in North America make New Year’s resolutions – and the most common resolution is to lose weight.
Within a few weeks the number of people sticking to their resolve declines dramatically. Given the importance of improving our behavior, an encouraging word from an ally may be just the thing we all need to keep our resolve!
Mechanics of weight loss
Let’s review the best advice for weight loss that we have gathered from expert sources over the last several years.
How
. Reduce your caloric intake to match your basal metabolic rate (BMR). BMR represents the number of calories your body needs at rest; in other words, your body burns these calories through basic functions. So, BMR represents the ideal number of calories you should eat in a day.
BASAL METABOLIC RATE (BMR) CALCULATOR
BMR represents the ideal number of calories you should consume in a day to maintain your weight.
Females:
(_____________________x10) + ___________________________
Your Current Weight Your Current Weight
Males:
(_____________________x10) + 2 x_________________________
Your Current Weight Your Current Weight
. Increase your activity to burn one to two pounds of fat per week.
When
. Never eat within two hours of bedtime.
. Morning exercise is a bit better than evening exercise.
. Never consume more than 400 calories in an hour.
What
. Eat according to an organized plan. For example, the South Beach, Ornish and Mediterranean diets all provide customized dieting tools.
. Do both aerobic and resistance exercises most days of the week.
Why
Your sense of purpose will help drive your success.
Speed bumps
Somewhere along the way you are going to experience discouragement, disappointment or despondency. It may be when:
. You hit a weight loss plateau.
. You see others doing what you used to do and the old habits pull at your heart.
. Your inner voices – I call them my “council of critics” – start to tell you lies about failure and success.
What do you do when you hit a speed bump?
The answer to this question does not lie in the “how, when, what” of weight loss. The answer lies in the “why.” Your personal “why” gives you energy. It inspires you, motivates you, and drives you to complete your goal.
Remember to let your desire fuel your action; let your actions harmonize with your sense of purpose. Simply be resolved to live a life of purpose and you will have the energy to get beyond the speed bumps.
Common setbacks
Unsupportive family: Losing weight with an uncooperative family is very difficult. In fact, diet failure is far more common among people with kids at home than among empty-nesters. A great solution is to turn those sources of distraction into cheerleaders. Recruit your family into your support group. Ask them for help and you may be surprised how helpful a supportive family can be.
Parties and gatherings: Parties and family gatherings are another trigger for setbacks. Food and a festive environment are catalysts for overeating and skipping exercise. Careful planning in advance can really help with food selection and an exercise schedule. And if you do overindulge, remember the “calories in, calories out” rule and increase your exercise for a week or two to burn off the extra calories.
Emotional speed bumps: Depression, discouragement and despondency are also common triggers for diet failure. Remembering the 10 Essentials for Health and Wellness can be a good antidote. For instance, Essential #6 teaches us that we need to give and receive love for excellent health. Love moves us to commit ourselves to a life of purpose. Purpose is the reason for action. Therefore, love can help us avoid fear, shame and doubt.
Conclusion
When we commit ourselves to such noble pursuits, do they not deserve our very best attention? We need to define our purpose as the foundation for success. Purpose is an important motivation to help us reshape our thinking. Purpose is the antidote to self-sabotage.
Ponder each of these 10 life-changing essentials for healthy living. You will soon see that each of these gems reflect the light you need to see beliefs that no longer serve your best interests. You can confront self-sabotage and slay the dragons that keep you from reaching your goals. Also, learning and living the 10 Essentials provides you with powerful tools to reshape your attitudes into the very ones that can help you to reach your goals, live the life you want and fulfill your purpose.
Take Control of Your Health
. Plan a balance of calories and activity for lifetime weight control
. Eat the optimal amount of fruits and vegetables daily
. Men: 9 servings
. Women: 7 servings
. Children: 5 servings
. Plan 30 minutes of aerobic activity most days of the week
. Do resistance training 2-5 times per week
. Supplement to support the four stages of weight loss:
. Energy and Metabolism: Leanology Weight Loss Capsules help increase metabolism and energy to support your body’s ability to burn more calories at rest.
. Cortisol and Stress Management: Leanology Weight Loss Capsules help to limit cortisol production in your body – cortisol is the stress-induced hormone that can lead to abdominal fat.
. Appetite Control: Leanology Appetite Control Chews help reduce the natural hunger signals in your body, minimizing cravings.
. Blood Sugar Control: Leanology Nutritional Shakes help your body use the nutrients you eat as energy, rather than storing them as fat.

How to Help Avoid Liver and Kidney Pollutants
In a previous Weekly Wellness Report we discussed the toxins that come into our body through our drinking water. What happens to these toxins when they enter our body? Can toxins lead to liver or kidney disease? What are some early signs of liver and kidney toxicity?
Early warning signs
Your liver and kidneys cooperate with another detoxification organ: the lungs. Signs that your liver and kidneys are struggling and pushing the toxic overload through your lungs can include:
. Breathing problems
. Bad breath
. Frequent lung and sinus infections
. Allergies.
Toxicity in the liver and kidneys affect another organ of detoxification: your skin. If your detoxification system becomes overloaded, your body will try to compensate for this overload by pushing some of this waste out through your skin. Early signs of this include:
. Itchy skin
. Bad-smelling perspiration
. Discolorations.
Eventually, you might even experience a breakdown in your skin when it can no longer handle this toxic load. A good example of this: When someone with diabetes has a toxic level of glucose, cracks can appear in the skin of the feet.
What about kidney/liver disease?
Kidneys
Kidneys filter your blood and ensure that proteins and minerals are in the right balance. Too many proteins from an unbalanced, low-carb diet may injure the kidneys. Too many minerals, such as too much phosphorus from soft drinks will injure your kidneys, and too much sugar will damage your kidneys beyond repair.
So, for good, healthy kidneys:
. Drink pure water
. Eat a balanced, healthy diet
. Avoid concentrated sugars.
Many toxins can destroy the kidneys, such as toxic levels of homocysteine and glucose. Still, one of the most common kidney toxins is aspirin, so it should be taken in moderation.
The liver
Many of the toxins excreted by the liver are either absorbed (taken out of your body) by fiber or reabsorbed into your liver. This is why it is so important to eat a high fiber diet and supplement your diet with fiber when needed.
Many toxins can destroy the liver, such as those from alcohol and hepatitis virus. However, the number one reason for liver transplants is acetaminophen toxicity. That’s why I suggest minimizing consumption of any products containing acetaminophen.
Toxic minerals such as lead and mercury can damage both the kidneys and the liver. Protect yourself from these serious diseases by isolating yourself from common toxins and insulating yourself with nutrients and fiber.
Fiber and detoxification
Our liver has a four-step process for detoxification.
1. First, toxins enter the liver, typically from the intestines. They are changed in the liver by an enzyme called CYP, which stands for cytochrome. In the first stage of detoxification the CYP enzyme makes the toxin expand and creates a large surface area – like a sponge.
2. The second stage is to douse this sponge-like toxin with antioxidants and other special nutrients.
3. The third stage is to convert this fat-based sponge to a water base so that it can be attached to fiber.
4. The fourth step in detoxification is to push the fiber and the toxin out through the colon.
Now you can see why fiber in our diet is so important. To properly detoxify we must have at least 30 grams of fiber in our diet every day. In many cultures, people ingest 60 grams or more of dietary fiber every day. These groups have the absolute lowest cholesterol on the planet, as fiber helps detoxify cholesterol as well.

Healthy Aging After Retirement
According to the book “BioMarkers,” the greatest predictor of health as we age is the level of lean body mass that we carry. Lean body mass fuels our metabolism. Unfortunately, a chronic wasting condition affects many seniors. The condition is called sarcopenia. What causes it and what can we do to prevent and even reverse it?
Sarcopenia – chronic wasting
A deficit in lean body mass (muscles, organs, bones, etc.) is called sarcopenia. Energy is born in your muscles and other lean body mass. It is created to meet the needs of the day. People actually program their energy metabolism by their activity level. In other words, if you regularly expend a certain amount of energy every day, your body will start anticipating this. Your metabolism will create the lean body mass and produce the energy needed to meet the regular tasks of the day.
Energy requires fuel. A healthy person will have a hunger equivalent to their energy needs. The hunger ceases and you feel satisfied when nutrient levels – especially fats – have reached the general requirements for fuel anticipated by your body. Interestingly, in a healthy person certain cravings will direct their appetite to foods containing the nutrients they lack. Most of us have obliterated our delicate sense of taste with added salt and sugar. We have erased the ability of our body to communicate through cravings.
These are three main components for metabolism and building lean body mass:
1. Peaceful sleep
2. Nutritious foods
3. Purposeful daily activity.
Without these three elements your body simply does not have the resources or even the need to build lean body mass. Building up does not keep pace with wearing down. As the balance of metabolism tips toward muscle loss instead of muscle gain, a person is at risk of sarcopenia.
Purpose, sleep and nutrition
“BioMarkers” also discusses how the human body can begin to shut down after retirement when there is a lack of purposeful daily activity. This is accompanied by a reduced ability to sleep and eat. With less whole food in the diet, fewer nutrients are ingested and vitamin deficiency is very common.
A real key for healthy aging is reclaiming your sense of purpose in life. When we are younger, this sense of purpose is often expressed in caring for a family or pursuing a career. As we age, new activities may replace the endeavors of our youth:
. Adult education
. Volunteerism
. Mentoring.
Additionally, a regular exercise program becomes very critical as we age, and we should pay more attention to a healthy diet every day and peaceful sleep every night.
The supplements of healthy aging include four critical components:
. A balanced multiple vitamin/mineral supplement to protect against nutrient deficiency
. An essential fatty acid supplement to reduce inflammation in the arteries and rehydrate the brain
. A Vitamin C supplement to serve as an antioxidant reserve and to help keep the immune system active
. A B-12 supplement to help keep energy levels up and the mind bright.
Vitamin B-12 is the number one nutrient deficiency among seniors, followed by Vitamin C.
Healthy aging after retirement
The average lifespan of retirees is only 2.5 years from the point of retirement. Without a sense of purpose there is no reason for energy and the body simply begins to shut down. The greatest wellness and longevity is experienced by those who enjoy purposeful daily activity, peaceful sleep and a nutritious diet. Take your healthy aging supplements and, to paraphrase former President George H.W. Bush, “Stop yelling at the TV; get up off the couch, get out of the house and live the life of your dreams!”

Nearly everyone makes one or a few New Year’s resolutions, and many people find it difficult to keep up on them past February. This year, try these tips to add a little more help to your healthy choices.
1. Talk
Let your loved ones know you are determined to make healthy choices in the new year. Let them know their support is crucial to your success. Ignore naysayers and negativity. You are the one ultimately responsible for your own health, but having a close circle of friends and family offering encouragement can make the tough spots easier to bear.
2. Enlist help
Find a friend to commit to the same or similar resolutions as you. Having someone to answer to can be a powerful motivator. Know there is someone nearby who can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with you as you commit to a healthier lifestyle.
3. Pray
Always remember that God has your best interests in mind. Nothing is too small a concern to pray for, whether it is drinking more water every day or opening your heart to being a more forgiving person. Daily prayer will give you the confidence you need to succeed.
TriVita’s Sublingual B-12, B-6 & Folic Acid.™ offers more daily energy and mental clarity, two factors critical to sticking with your health goals. One tablet daily under your tongue can also reduce homocysteine levels, which in turn can lower your risks of heart disease, stroke and Alzheimer’s.

It happens to everyone at some time or another: a great big case of the “blahs.” Accompanying the blahs can be sleepiness, boredom, headache, and general crankiness. What can be done to combat the blahs?
Have you kept up your exercise
Exercise releases endorphins that help keep your mood up.
Give yourself the day off
Brew tea, read a book, walk the dog, take yourself out to eat; whatever soothes you... give yourself permission to dedicate time to yourself to relax and rejuvenate.
Call a friend and ask them to cheer you up!
Friends know what tickles you. Maybe all you need is a good laugh with a good friend.
Talk about it
If your blahs are stemming from a more serious issue, talk it over with someone you trust. Blahs that last several days might be more than just the blahs.
Remember that stress can harm your heart, so beating the blahs isn’t just a matter of mood. Taking steps now to reduce blah-related stress will help your whole health over the long term.
Consistent use of TriVita’s Sublingual B-12, B-6 & Folic Acid.™ can elevate your mood as well as help protect your heart. Taken every day under your tongue, this patented formula increases energy and boosts optimism.

Boost your mood
Your mood affects everyone and everything around you. The color of your mood will brighten or darken every circumstance and moment of your life. Attitude is how you look at the world; mood is the feeling and expression of your attitude. The two go hand in hand: a positive attitude tends to lift your mood, a negative attitude darkens it.
Playing with your pets
Pet antics are virtually guaranteed to cheer you. Just relaxing with your pet nearby, giving them a good, long pet will lower your stress level and improve your outlook.
Read a book
Or read the newspaper comics. Doing something to distract you from what put you in a bad mood is always a good idea. Humorous books or comics make it all the more likely to cheer you up.
Exercising
Being in a bad mood means your body is undergoing stress and tension. Burn off the negative feelings with a brisk walk or bike ride.
Talking about it
What seemed to set off your dark mood? Was it a one-time occurrence, or is it a constant stressor? If there is something in your life that is leading to prolonged bad moods, depression, or anger, then it’s time to talk the problem out with someone. A good friend may be all you need to vent your frustrations; in more severe cases, a professional counselor may be in order. In any case, getting the cause of your bad mood off your chest will alleviate its immediate symptoms.
Finally, there are always two sides to every coin: don’t berate yourself if you’re not always on top of the world. It’s okay to feel every mood that comes along; just don’t let the bad ones bring you down.
B-12 can lift your mood and increase your optimism, as well as help protect your heart. TriVita’s Sublingual B-12, B-6 & Folic Acid.™, just once a day under your tongue, can elevate your mood and energy naturally.
